Confucius and Yan Hui: A Simple Meal, A Gourd of Water
Master and Disciple in a Narrow Lane
In a narrow, secluded lane of Qufu, the capital of the State of Lu, the slanting rays of the setting sun fell upon the mottled earthen walls.
Inside, Confucius sat cross-legged on a mat, a bamboo scroll spread across his lap. Beside him knelt a young man—Yan Hui. His face was thin, his clothes plain, yet his eyes shone bright as stars.
Yan Hui, styled Ziyuan, was Confucius's most beloved disciple. Though thirty years his junior, he had long been regarded by the Master as a kindred spirit in spirit and mind.
One Basket of Food, One Gourd of Water
Confucius set down the scroll and let his gaze rest on the coarse earthenware bowl before Yan Hui—inside were only a few wild greens and a small handful of brown rice.
"Hui," Confucius said softly, "day after day you eat from a single bamboo basket, drink from a single gourd, and live in a lane as humble as this. Were anyone else in your place, they would surely be consumed by misery."
Yan Hui looked up, a gentle smile forming at the corners of his mouth.
"Master, I do not feel it is hardship. A simple meal and a gourd of water are enough. What brings me joy is hearing the Way, growing each day—not the pleasures of the palate or the comforts of fine dwelling."
Confucius gazed at him, a thin sheen of moisture welling in his eyes. He turned toward the door, where other disciples were peeking in, and said:
"How admirable is Hui! A basket of food, a gourd of water, in a humble lane—others could not endure such distress, yet Hui does not let it change his joy. How admirable is Hui indeed!"
He Does Not Transfer Anger; He Does Not Repeat Mistakes
One day, Confucius paced alone in the courtyard, with Zigong following behind.
"Ci," Confucius suddenly stopped and called Zigong by his style name, "tell me—between you and Yan Hui, who is the better?"
Zigong quickly bowed his hands: "How dare I compare myself to Yan Hui! He hears one thing and understands ten; I hear one thing and understand two."
Confucius sighed deeply and nodded. "You speak the truth. Neither you nor I are his equal."
He paused in silence, then continued: "What makes Hui truly rare is this—he does not transfer his anger; he does not repeat his mistakes."
Zigong was lost in thought.
"Master, do you mean that Hui never vents his anger upon the innocent, and never makes the same mistake twice?"
"Precisely." Confucius gazed at the last blush of sunset on the horizon. "When ordinary people suffer setbacks, they often transfer their anger—to wife and children, to servants, to heaven and earth. But Hui—his anger stops where it belongs, and spreads no further. When ordinary people recognize a fault, they often repeat it the next day. But Hui—once he knows a fault, he corrects it. Like an eclipse of the sun or moon: the fault is seen by all, but the correction is admired by all."
Heaven Is Destroying Me
Yet fate was not kind to this most virtuous disciple.
That year, Yan Hui was only just past forty. He had lived in poverty all his life, studied with such intensity that his body had long since grown frail.
The news arrived while Confucius was teaching beneath the apricot tree platform.
"Yan Hui… has passed away."
The bamboo scroll slipped from Confucius's hands and fell to the ground.
He looked up to the heavens and cried out—a voice that tore through the sky over Qufu:
"Alas! Heaven is destroying me! Heaven is destroying me!"
The disciples had never seen their master so undone. They rushed forward to comfort him, but Confucius pushed them aside and staggered toward the humble room where Yan Hui had lived.
The room was empty. On the desk lay bamboo scrolls annotated by Yan Hui in his lifetime, the ink still fresh. In the corner sat that same coarse earthenware bowl, its rim bearing a fine crack—the bowl Yan Hui had used for over a decade.
Confucius picked up the bowl, pressed it to his chest, and tears streamed down his aged face.
"Hui… you lived in poverty all your life, and even in death you have no proper coffin. Your teacher has failed you."
The disciples knelt in rows, weeping too hard to speak.
Though Dead, Yet Alive
Years later, Confucius too reached the end of his life.
On his deathbed, he said to Zigong, who was keeping vigil:
"The Xia people place the coffin on the eastern steps after death, the Zhou on the western… but the Yin people place it between the two pillars of the hall. My ancestors were of the Yin. Last night I dreamed I was sitting between the two pillars, receiving offerings."
He paused, his gaze passing over Zigong's shoulder, as if seeing something beyond.
"Ci… I dreamed that Hui came back."
Zigong gripped his master's hand tightly, tears falling like rain.
Confucius smiled and closed his eyes.
Epilogue
Twenty-five hundred years have passed.
That humble lane is long gone; that coarse earthenware bowl has turned to dust. But Confucius's words—"How admirable is Hui!"—still echo in the hearts of all who seek spiritual abundance.
In his brief life, Yan Hui proved one thing:
True abundance lies not in external things, but within the heart.
True joy lies not in how much one possesses, but in who one becomes.
"A basket of food, a gourd of water, in a humble lane—others could not endure such distress, yet Hui does not let it change his joy."
Perhaps this is the simplest, and most moving, bond between teacher and student in all of Chinese history.
