The Five Classics: The Canonical Scriptures of Kingship and the Wellspring of Chinese Culture
序章|Prologue
"Gentle and sincere—that is the teaching of the Shi (Poetry). Broad and far-reaching—that is the teaching of the Shu (Documents). Vast and harmonious—that is the teaching of the Yue (Music). Pure, tranquil, and subtle—that is the teaching of the Yi (Changes). Reverent, frugal, solemn, and respectful—that is the teaching of the Li (Rites). Skillful in composition and comparison of events—that is the teaching of the Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals)."
— Book of Rites, "Interpretation of the Classics"
From the Western Han dynasty onward, the "Five Classics" (五经, Wujing) established by the official Erudites (Boshi) comprised the Yijing (Classic of Changes), Shangshu (Venerated Documents), Shijing (Classic of Poetry), Yili (Ceremonial Rites), and Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals)—the surviving corpus of the original "Six Classics" (六经, Liujing) after the loss of the Yuejing (Classic of Music). The disappearance of the Yuejing is like ancient music scattered into the wind: its name remains in the catalog of classics, but its sound and form can never be recovered. Yet the Five Classics alone endured, becoming the very skeleton of Chinese scholarship for two millennia, the foundational hue of the literati spirit, and the anchor of civilizational identity.
The Six Classics and the Loss of Music
In pre-Qin literature, Zhuangzi·Tianyun records Confucius telling Lao Dan: "Qiu has studied the six classics—Shi, Shu, Li, Yue, Yi, and Chunqiu." Though couched in allegorical language, this reflects the Warring States period's view of these six texts as a unified corpus. Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian states more explicitly: "Confucius taught the Shi, Shu, Li, and Yue to disciples numbering around three thousand."
The loss of the Yuejing has been debated for centuries. One theory attributes it to the Qin book-burning: musical notation, transmitted orally, was the most perishable. Another holds that there was never a separate Yuejing text at all—that the spirit of music was already embedded within the Li (Rites). As the saying goes, "Ritual and music must not be separated from one's person for a moment." The Li records the outer forms; music expresses the inner spirit. The two are two sides of one coin. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Book of Rites states: "Music cultivates the inner; ritual cultivates the outer." Indeed, within the seventeen chapters of the Yili, every major rite includes musical accompaniment—music is already within ritual; a separate classic was unnecessary.
In 136 BCE, Emperor Wu of Han established Erudite positions for the Five Classics, officially making them the core of state-sponsored learning. From then on, the term "Five Classics" replaced "Six Classics" as the central axis of the two-thousand-year classical studies tradition. From the Xiping Stone Classics of the Eastern Han to the Zhengshi Stone Classics of Cao Wei, the Kaicheng Stone Classics of Tang, and the Qianlong Stone Classics of Qing—generation after generation of emperors carved the classics in stone, and the Five Classics always occupied the center.
The Yijing: Pure, Subtle, and All-Encompassing
The Yijing (Classic of Changes) began as a divination manual—"In ancient times, the sages created the Yi by invoking the spiritual to generate the yarrow stalks" (Shuogua). Its true greatness lies in its transformation from a fortune-telling handbook into a cosmological system. The interplay of yin and yang lines generates sixty-four hexagrams; each hexagram gives rise to others; every line is in flux—together they form a dynamic model of the world.
Zheng Xuan identified three meanings of yi (change): bianyi (change/transformation), jianyi (simplicity/ease), and buyi (constancy/immutability). All things in the cosmos are in constant flux (bianyi), yet the principles governing them are supremely simple (jianyi), and those principles themselves are eternally constant (buyi). These three appear contradictory but are unified—as the Xici (Great Commentary) states: "Simplicity and ease—and the principles of all under heaven are thereby attained."
Western Han "image-number" scholarship (Meng Xi, Jing Fang) linked the Yi to astronomy, calendrics, and yin-yang omens, constructing an elaborate cosmos-political correspondence system. Eastern Han scholar Yu Fan developed the "Na Jia" and "Fei Fu" methods; Zheng Xuan's commentary incorporated "line-positions." Wang Bi later swept away the images to speak of principle, interpreting the Yi through Lao-Zhuang thought, inaugurating the "meaning-and-principle" tradition. The subsequent debate between "image-number" and "meaning-principle" schools runs through the entire history of classical studies—not unlike the medieval Western scholastic debate between literal and allegorical interpretation.
Sinological Note: 理雅各(James Legge)于1882年出版 The Yi King(收录于 The Sacred Books of the East 第16卷),是西方世界第一部完整英译《周易》并附详注的著作。
The Shangshu: Broad, Far-Reaching, and the Ancestor of Political Canon
The Shangshu (Venerated Documents, also known as the Shujing)—"Shang" means "above" or "ancient"; it is the "Book of Ancient Documents." It is China's earliest extant collection of political speeches and records, spanning from the times of Yao and Shun to Duke Mu of Qin. Its six genres—dian (canons), mo (councils), xun (instructions), gao (announcements), shi (oaths), and ming (commands)—cover imperial achievements, court dialogues, battle oaths, and investiture documents.
The fate of the Shangshu is the most dramatic chapter in Chinese classical studies. After the Qin book-burning, Fu Sheng of Jinan hid the text in a wall; in the early Han, he transmitted twenty-eight chapters in "New Script" (clerical script), which were officially recognized as the New Script Shangshu.
Toward the end of Emperor Wu's reign, King Gong of Lu dismantled Confucius's old residence and discovered the "Old Script Shangshu" (written in pre-Qin tadpole script), containing sixteen additional chapters. Kong Anguo presented it to the court, but it was never officially established—this was the Old Script Shangshu.
In the Eastern Jin, Mei Ze presented a fifty-eight-chapter version—thirty-three being reworkings of Fu Sheng's text, and twenty-five newly added. This version circulated for over a thousand years until the early Qing scholar Yan Ruoju, in his Evidential Studies on the Old Script Shangshu, conclusively proved the twenty-five new chapters to be forgeries. The "Forged Old Script Shangshu" case stands as the most famous textual authentication controversy in Chinese intellectual history.
The core proposition of the Zhou Documents section—"Great Heaven has no favorites; it assists only the virtuous" (Command to Cai Zhong), and "Heaven's sight is from our people's sight; Heaven's hearing is from our people's hearing" (Grand Oath)—shifts political legitimacy from "Heaven's mandate" to "virtue" and "the people," establishing the foundational tone of "people-centeredness" and "revering Heaven while protecting the people" in Chinese political thought.
The Shoo King(Sacred Books of the East 第3卷),其译名 "Shoo King" 为威妥玛拼音时代的产物。当代汉学界更常用 The Book of Documents 或 The Classic of History。
The Shijing: Gentle, Sincere, and Without Depravity
The Shijing (Classic of Poetry) contains 305 poems (plus 6 instrumental pieces with titles but no text), divided into Feng (Airs—160 folk songs from fifteen states), Ya (Odes—74 Lesser Odes and 31 Greater Odes, court hymns), and Song (Hymns—31 Zhou Hymns, 4 Lu Hymns, 5 Shang Hymns, temple sacrificial songs).
"The three hundred poems—in one phrase: 'Think no depravity.'" (Analects 2.2). Confucius valued the Shi not only for its literary merit but for its moral-educative function. "Without studying the Shi, one cannot speak." In the Spring and Autumn period, reciting poems to express intent was a basic skill of diplomats and ministers. A poetry collection served, in effect, as the era's "diplomatic phrasebook."
The Han dynasty had four schools of Shi interpretation: the Lu (Shen Pei), Qi (Yuan Gusheng), and Han (Han Ying) schools were New Script and officially recognized; the Mao school (Mao Heng, Mao Chang) was Old Script and not officially recognized. The four schools differed significantly, especially in their "praise-and-satire" (meici) political readings. Zheng Xuan's Mao Shi Jian (Commentary on Mao's Poetry) synthesized New and Old Script traditions, enabling the Mao version to survive alone; the other three schools gradually perished (only Han Ying's Outer Commentary on the Han Shi survives).
The Yili: Reverent, Solemn, and Ordering Heaven and Earth
The "Li" established by Western Han Erudites was the Yili (Ceremonial Rites, then called simply Li or Shi Li), not the Zhouli (Rites of Zhou). The Zhouli (originally titled Zhouguan) was only promoted by Liu Xin and officially recognized under Wang Mang. The Liji (Book of Rites) was a collection of commentaries compiled by Dai De and Dai Sheng. Though highly valued in the Eastern Han, it was not until the Tang dynasty that the Liji replaced the Yili as one of the "Five Classics" (in the "Nine Classics" reorganization).
The seventeen chapters of the Yili cover the core rites of an educated man's life and political career: the capping rite (coming of age), the wedding rite, mourning rites, post-burial soul-settling rites, sacrificial rites, village drinking and archery rites, court banquets, grand archery ceremonies, diplomatic visits, and the imperial audience rite.
Ritual is not merely external formal regulation; it is the restraint and expression of inner emotion. "Ritual follows human feelings and provides them with measured patterns." (Book of Rites, Fang Ji). The grief of mourning rites, the reverence of wedding rites, the order of village drinking—ritual channels human emotion into a shareable, transmissible symbolic system, transforming individual experience into collective memory.
The Chunqiu: Skillful Composition, Subtle Words with Grand Meaning
The Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals) was originally the chronicle kept by Lu state historians, covering 242 years from 722 to 481 BCE. The text is extremely terse—the shortest entry is a single character ("Ming"—locusts); the longest runs just over forty characters. Yet Mencius said: "When Confucius completed the Chunqiu, rebellious ministers and villainous sons were struck with fear." How could such a terse chronicle possess such power?
|---|---|---|---|
|

Briefly official under Emperor Xuan |
|
Zuozhuan |
Zuo Qiuming |

The Gongyang tradition reached its peak in the Western Han. Dong Zhongshu interpreted it through "Heaven-human resonance," proposing concepts like "Great Unity" (da yitong), the "Three Ages" (san shi), and the "Three Dynastic Successions" (tong san tong), directly influencing Emperor Wu's "dismiss the hundred schools, revere only Confucianism." In the Qing, Zhuang Cunyu and Liu Fenglu revived Gongyang studies, which passed through Gong Zizhen and Wei Yuan to Kang Youwei, becoming the theoretical weapon of the late Qing Reform Movement.
The Zuozhuan, famed for its rich narratives, rivals the Records of the Grand Historian in literary achievement. Du Yu's commentary (Jin dynasty) and Kong Yingda's sub-commentary (Tang) form the twin pillars of Zuozhuan scholarship.
The "Spring and Autumn brushwork" (Chunqiu bifa) means "one character of praise or blame": killing a ruler is written as shi (regicide—derogatory); killing a guilty ruler is zhu (execution—commendatory). Only the Son of Heaven may "hunt"; anyone else is recorded differently. Word choice itself is a political judgment. This "subtle words with grand meaning" narrative style influenced two millennia of Chinese historiography—from the Shiji to the Zizhi Tongjian—and profoundly shaped the historical consciousness of the entire East Asian Sinographic sphere.
Sinological Note: 理雅各于1872年出版 The Ch'un Ts'ew(附《左传》译文,Sacred Books of the East 第5卷)。 A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy

The Five Classics are not five independent books but a deeply intertextual system. Zheng Xuan commented on all the classics, attempting to build a unified hermeneutic system—interpreting the Shi through the Li, the Chunqiu through the Yi, and verifying the Li through the Shu. This method of "using one classic to interpret all classics" parallels the medieval Western scholastic project of subsuming all knowledge under Sacred Scripture.
In the late Qing and early Republic, classical studies collapsed. The civil service examination was abolished in 1905; in 1912, Cai Yuanpei ordered the cessation of classic-reading in primary schools. The Five Classics fell from "canonical scriptures of kingship" to "ancient documents." Yet, ironically—after the institutional existence of classical studies perished, the ideas within the Five Classics survived as "cultural DNA," continuing to live in Chinese language, customs, and ethical concepts.

8.2 从"Missionary Scholarship"到"Academic Sinology"
Early Western knowledge of the Five Classics began with Jesuit introductions by Matteo Ricci and others. In the 17th-18th centuries, François Noël's Sinensis Imperii Libri Classici (1711, a Latin translation of the "Six Classics") brought the classics systematically into European intellectual circles, directly influencing Leibniz's reflections on binary arithmetic and a universal characteristic.
From the 19th century onward, as Sinology became a formal university discipline in the West, Five Classics studies shifted from "missionary curiosity" to "academic philology." James Legge's monumental work marked this transition. In the late 20th century, scholars like Roger T. Ames and David L. Hall, associated with "Boston Confucianism," have attempted to reinterpret the cosmology and ethics of the Five Classics through process philosophy.
In 2013, China launched the Reconstruction of Rare Editions of Chinese Classics project, using modern technology to reproduce fine editions of the Five Classics from the Song and Yuan dynasties onward. That same year, UNESCO inscribed Korean manuscript copies of the Shijing into the Memory of the World Register. The Five Classics—these "canonical scriptures of kingship"—are participating in global civilizational dialogue in new forms.
结语|Epilogue
The Five Classics originated in pre-Qin times, were established under Emperor Wu of Han, and transmitted for a thousand years. They were once revered by emperors as the standard of governance, recited by scholars as the yardstick of self-cultivation, denounced by the Doubting Antiquity school as forgeries, and hailed by New Confucians as a source of wisdom. Their tumultuous fate is like the six lines of a hexagram in the Yi—the hidden dragon at the first line; the flying dragon at the fifth; the arrogant dragon at the top; and then returning to the use of the ninth: "See the flock of dragons without heads—auspicious."
Whether or not you regard the Five Classics as "sacred scripture," they are—and will forever remain—the "source code" for understanding Chinese civilization that cannot be bypassed. Reading the Five Classics may not enable you to "know the Mandate of Heaven," but it will at least help you understand why the people on this land, for two thousand years, have been seeking that delicate balance between "transmitting without creating" and "renewing day after day."
"Jing—that which is constant. It possesses the Way of the Five Constants, therefore it is called the Five Classics."
