Dear New Students,

Good morning. It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of all the faculty members, staff and senior students. This year, more than 1700 freshmen have been admitted to UIC. Today, we gather together to celebrate the beginning of your life at UIC. Welcome to our big family. At UIC we are like family members because we care for every student’s development and growth. Here at UIC, whoever you meet, wherever you are on campus, we put student development at the center of our service. 

At UIC, we treasure human connections between teachers and students, and between students and their peers. You probably have already met your peer mentor. One teacher will be assigned as a Mentor and two senior students as Peer Mentors for around 15 freshmen that together form a Mentor Caring Programme Group. This is a unique social support network we build in UIC to take care of our new students. Reach out to them if you have any difficulties.

Soon after this Inauguration, you will also meet your Dean, Programme Director and teachers. Remember their contact information and take the initiative to look for them when you have questions, in particular with plans of study and difficulties in academic performance.  

After settling down in this beautiful campus, you will understand that UIC is genuinely a Liberal Arts College, first of its kind in Mainland China. We lay emphasis on the cultivation and enrichment of student character, not the pure impartment of knowledge. You can join a variety of interest clubs and academic societies. You are encouraged to explore, through curricular and extra-curricular activities in the areas of academic and social learning that really interest you. Your mission is to discover, develop and actualize your full potential. 

UIC is a future oriented university. We are preparing our young people for the development of China in a peaceful environment. We care for the advancement of sciences that are conducive to better human living. We care even more for the protection of the environment and the promotion of a healthy life, a healthy university, healthy cities and healthy populations.

This year I am very glad that nine students will receive the Entrance Scholarship. Academic studies have never been easy at UIC. The highest standards of academic performances are required from each and every one of you. English is the medium of instruction. You are expected to speak and write in fluent English upon graduation. I hope that in the coming four years, you will keep pushing yourself and scale even greater heights.

UIC is an international college. Other than an internationally recognized curriculum, we wish to prepare our students to become “global citizens” who are proud of their Chinese origin, history and heritage. Today UIC is renowned for its unique education model of combining the best of the West and the East, and along with the Old and the New. We hope that our students will be well disciplined in traditional Chinese Wisdom and masterful in modern natural, social or management sciences.

Dear students, I have high hopes for you. First, I sincerely hope that you can cherish your life and pursue authentic happiness. Second, I hope that you can learn to be proactive and become a good manager of your time. Third, I hope that all your experiences at UIC will help you to grow into a well-rounded global citizens. At UIC, possibilities belongs to infinity.

I wish you a colorful, fruitful and challenging learning life at UIC.
